Are you falling for a specific employer this season, but just don’t know how to get your foot in the door? It can be difficult at times to have employers first look at you. Follow these helpful steps to assist you.
- Be knowledgeable about your field. This means staying up to date on the latest current events. Take a few minutes each day, to browse through both local and national news. Download a news app that can send you notifications throughout the day. This will make you a more informed consumer and make it easier to talk to employers.
- Be visible in your profession. By keeping up with the news, you can share stories of your own opinion of the event on your own social media. This doesn’t have to be anything lengthy, just a way that employers know you are engaged in events and you will know issues and trends that may be affecting them. If you really enjoy expressing yourself, consider creating a blog as well.
- Get involved. Is there a national or student chapter club in the area of interest? Become a member or volunteer. Get your name out there and mingle with these employers. These can be great networking opportunities right under your nose. Also, join Alumni groups such as “CNU Alumni” on LinkedIn.
- Personalize yourself. Create your own Website or portfolio. You want to try to market yourself in unique ways to ensure that your name will appear in a Google search. Creating a personal Website or portfolio is a more direct way. This is also very interactive, engaging, and shows that you are both open to new trends and technically savvy. Think of how you would like to brand yourself and display that through your site.
