We all know resumes are important, but did you know your cover letter has the ability to set you apart from other applicants? Often overlooked, the cover letter is actually a very important component when it comes to getting hired! Here are some fast tips on crafting the perfect cover letter for you.

Show off your personality! Your cover letter gives you the ability to make the person on your resume come to life. Explain your interest in the field and make sure to research ahead so you can sprinkle some company knowledge throughout the letter.

Opening lines are key. Make sure you hook the employer with your first sentence. They have to read a lot of cover letters and you want to stand out in their mind.

Keep it short. Taking up more than a page isn’t necessary.

Elaborate. Share your experiences and why they’d make you a good fit for the position to which you are applying. You don’t just want to be listing off what’s on your resume, but rather what you did in previous roles and how it has shaped you!

Check it! Go over your cover letter multiple times to check for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. One small mix-up and you could look like a rookie.

While looking for a job may be stressful, there is no doubt that the journey in acquiring one is always unique – simply embrace it and prepare. The key is to develop great strategies that will help you attain that job. Here are a few tips:

  • Set aside some alone time and assess yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Focus on a field that you potentially could go into that will use your skills/strengths and are a match for your interests.
  • Research! Informational interviews can be a great starting point by simply interviewing people that are working in the field you desire to enter. They can offer you insights and advice. Use this opportunity to get your resumes tailored (who better to ask than the people who are working the job you are interested in?).
  • More editing: your resume is a great tool to utilize while job hunting. Once you think you have a top notch resume, tailor it to each job and each employer. Incorporate specific keywords and phrases associated with the field you would like to go into.
  • Organize yourself – creating a spreadsheet of the list of jobs you are interested in can help. The point is to develop a system of organization that will aid you in your job search.
  • Build up your network of contacts – you get jobs by talking to people!
  • Develop anecdotes that will display the skills you have gained through other experiences. People remember stories! Use them while networking as well as in interviewing situations.
  • Prepare for job interviews – practice voicing out common answers to common questions employers like asking.
  • Follow up with hiring managers.
